This $250 Camera Keeps Getting Better!

This $250 Camera Keeps Getting Better!

If I told you that for just $250, you could get a compact camera that shoots true 14-bit RAW video internally, would you believe me?

Let me introduce you to the Canon EOS M — a 2012 mirrorless camera that, with a little DIY love, becomes one of the most powerful budget cinema tools in 2025. And no, I’m not exaggerating.

Canon EOS M – The Budget Filmmaker’s Hidden Gem

  • Price: ~$250 used on eBay, MPB or KEH

  • Sensor: 18MP APS-C

  • Mount: Canon EF-M (can adapt to EF, Nikon F, M42, etc.)

  • Weight: 298g with battery and SD card

  • Display: 3" touchscreen (no flip)

  • Ports: Mini HDMI, mic input

Despite being over a decade old, the EOS M is still Canon’s smallest interchangeable lens camera. It fits in a fanny pack and adapts to just about any lens system with a $10–$20 adapter.

But what really unlocks its potential is a piece of firmware called Magic Lantern.

Magic Lantern – Unlock RAW Video & Cinema Features

Magic Lantern is a free, open-source firmware add-on for many older Canon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. For the EOS M, it brings:

  • 14-bit RAW video recording

  • Zebras, waveforms, false color

  • Focus peaking

  • Dual ISO

  • Bitrate/resolution/frame rate control

  • HDR video and more

📌 Magic Lantern doesn’t overwrite the camera’s firmware — it runs off the SD card. Pop in a fresh card, and the camera reverts to stock.

There is some risk, since Canon never intended this camera to do all this. But in reality, bricking the camera is very rare.

Meet the REVO Cinema Housing – A Mini Red Komodo?

Once you’ve unlocked RAW video, you can rehouse your EOS M into a custom-built carbon fiber composite rig called the Filmatura REVO.

What the REVO adds:

  • Active cooling fan – solves overheating while shooting RAW

  • Sony NPF battery mount – huge battery life

  • Full-size HDMI out + USB-C charging

  • 1/4-20 mounts all over – for handles, monitors, etc.

  • Relocated screen & buttons – more ergonomic layout

  • Modular build – Rhino grips, cages, power plates available

This turns your pocket-sized camera into a modular, cinema-ready rig. It’s like a poor man’s Red Komodo for under $600.

Magic Lantern Video Modes I Use Most

You can customize your frame rate, resolution, and bit depth to your liking. Here are my go-to video modes:

  1. 4.2K RAW (16:9)

    • Resolution: 1736x2214

    • Frame rate: 24fps

    • Super sharp – best for controlled shots

  2. Slow Motion (46.8fps)

    • Resolution: 1736x976

    • Frame rate: 46.8fps

    • Great for B-roll and handheld – smooth and stable

    • Optionally bump to 60fps at wider aspect ratios (e.g. 2.35:1)

📌 Every mode has trade-offs — sharper modes = more rolling shutter; high FPS = slightly lower detail but smoother motion.

Image Quality and Low Light Performance

The EOS M shoots true 14-bit RAW, which means tons of flexibility in post. But low light isn’t its strength:

  • ISO 100–400 = usable

  • Above ISO 800 = noisy and colorful grain

  • 4.2K mode compresses noise better than lower-res modes

The Catch: Why It’s Not Perfect

Here’s the honest truth — this isn’t a perfect setup for everyone.

✅ Great for:

  • Learning RAW workflows

  • Cinematic B-roll

  • Narrative or scripted YouTube content

❌ Not ideal for:

  • Professional client shoots

  • Run-and-gun docs

  • Long continuous recording

Here are some downsides to expect:

  • Random recording errors

  • Overheating (mostly solved by Revo housing)

  • Rolling shutter (especially with fast handheld pans)

  • RAW Workflow: You’ll shoot in MLV format and need to transcode in MLV App to ProRes, DNG, etc.

  • Steep learning curve: Lots of trial-and-error to dial in best settings

Final Thoughts – The Best Video Rig Under $600?

If you want to learn RAW filmmaking, color grading, and proper exposure on a budget — the Canon EOS M + Magic Lantern + Revo housing combo is unbeatable.

For under $600, you’re getting a mini cinema rig that shoots true 14-bit RAW and rivals cameras that cost 10x more. It’s not perfect, but it’s powerful and fun.
